Directions
In Austria, various Aufstriches, spreads or toppings on bread, are very common. They are served in Heuriger wine restaurants, as well as cafes, hotels and breakfast restaurants. These toppings are usually made based on cottage cheese or cream cheese with the addition of various ingredients such as paprika, green onions, blue cheeses, herbs, etc.
The most popular topping is Liptauer. It’s a dish of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, that’s why it’s popular in Austria, Slovakia and Hungary. It is named after the Slovak region of Liptov, which was part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire.
This site has a recipe for classic Liptauer Spread, but today we’re going to make a delicious dairy-free version! For it, you can buy ready-made cashew cream cheese or make it yourself using this recipe!
In addition to these ingredients for a more festive version, you can add capers, anchovies, mustard, pickles, chopped greens, green onions, or garlic to the Liptauer spread.
Bon Appetit!

Season with salt, black pepper, add honey and lemon juice to taste. Put it in the fridge for an hour. Serve Liptauer spread with gluten-free crispbread. |
