Directions
Orange punch is a dilly of traditional Christmas drinks. At Viennese Weihnachtsmärkte (Christmas markets) orange punch is offered in wonderful mugs alongside with hot wine. Orange flavor and bright color of this how drink is everything you need on cold winter evenings!
It’s so pleasant to make it at home and roll oneself in a blanket or rug, drink it in little sips and make New Year wishes.
There are a few secrets of the perfect orange punch:
- Use good wine and rum – the better the spirits, the tastier the punch.
- Use fresh juice instead of packaged. The latter is much less flavorful.
- Be sure to bring punch to a simmer, not a full boil.
- For punch to be smooth and good in texture, strain it twice according to the recipe. Don’t be lazy and you will end up with an elegant drink.
- The amount of sugar and lemon juice depends on how sweet/sour are the oranges and wine you use. I advise you to add less, try to taste, and then adjust to the desirable taste. Punch should have a rich sweet and sour taste.
- The recipe calls only for one spice – cloves. You could add your favorite spices, but! Orange punch has a very rich citrus flavor and taste, which cloves enhances perfectly. I recommend make punch with cloves only at the first try, and add other spices when you make it next time. I use only cloves – they make the perfect taste for me.
- Let your punch stand for 30 min to enrich in flavor.
- This recipe makes not very strong punch, so if you’d like it stronger – add more rum.
